The Department for Environment, Fisheries and Rural affairs (Defra) are the UK government department responsible for policy and regulations on environmental, food and rural and farming issues. Their priorities are to grow the rural economy, improve the environment and safeguard animal and plant health. Arctic science is relevant to Defra’s work in helping communities avoid or recover from flooding and other weather-related hazards and ensuring the sustainability of present and future food production and supply (including fisheries).
