The Royal Navy protects the security, independence and interests of the UK and its overseas territories both at home and around the world. One of the Royal Navy’s specific military tasks, the provision of nuclear deterrence, sees the deployment of submarines around the world, including the Arctic Ocean. Some of these submarines are equipped with sensors for data that is scientifically valuable, although the location and movements of the submarines are, of course, highly classified. Nevertheless, the Royal Navy has supplied the ARP’s SEATS project with some of their declassified data, allowing for the use of a dataset of unprecedented quality.
