Dr Cynan Ellis-Evans, ARP Programme Office

ARP Science Coordinator

Dr. Cynan Ellis-Evans oversees science coordination support at British Antarctic Survey and was substantially involved in the development and management of the recent International Polar Year (2007-2009).

He has a background of over two decades of research on aquatic microbial ecology and biogeochemistry in both Polar Regions. In addition Cynan also leads the NERC Arctic Office which has been established to coordinate and support increased UK research and operational activities in the Arctic.

Most recently he has taken on the role of science coordinator for the £16m NERC Arctic Research Programme (2011-2016). Amongst his international commitments Cynan has recently completed coordinating the EU-funded CAREX project on investigating life in extreme environments and is a Steering Board member of the EU-funded infrastructure project SIOS (Svalbard Integrated Earth Observing System).

He represents UK on the IASC (International Arctic Science Committee) Council and the FARO (Forum of Arctic Research Operators) and was chair of the SCAR/IASC Bipolar Action Group 2011-2013 providing recommendations to SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) and IASC Executive Boards on opportunities for linking Arctic and Antarctic science.
