Professor Doerthe Tetzlaff, Co-Investigator

Professor Doerthe Tetzlaff, who is a member of the HYDRA project, is a Chair in in Hydrology and Landscape Ecology at the School of Geosciences, University of Aberdeen.

She received her PhD in Hydrology from the University of Freiburg, Germany in 2004 and a DSc from the University of Aberdeen in 2013. She has expertise in tracer hydrology, hydrological modelling and GIS-based characterisation of catchment landscapes.

The basic aim of her research is to understand the spatial and temporal variability of how catchments function hydrologically at different scales; understanding the physical processes that generate runoff and stream flow, and the way these processes influence the hydrochemistry and hydroecology of streams. She is an adjunct Visiting Scientist Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, Berlin Germany and one of the Editors of Hydrological Processes (one of the top ranking journals in the ISI Water Resources subject area).

She is also a member of Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) Young Academy of Scotland. The international leadership capabilities of Professor Tetzlaff are well supported through the international collaborative research projects she is leading (e.g., North-Watch Network) and her active role in high-profile organisations such as the European Geosciences Union and the American Geophysical Union.

Currently, Professor Tetzlaff is the Director of the Northern Rivers Institute, School of Geosciences at the University of Aberdeen which hosts world-class expertise in aspects of catchment and tracer hydrology which include multi-proxy approaches to understanding runoff generation processes at different spatial and temporal scales; analytical capabilities for isotopic and geochemical tracers to assess the provenance and transit times of water in different catchment stores and at different scales and the integration of tracers in bespoke rainfall-runoff models to evaluate model structure and performance.
